Joomla Tutorials

When it comes to organizing the articles on the home page, there are two steps to take:

Front Page Manager

  1. Access your website's administrator interface (aka "back end")
  2. On the main menu (right under the Joomla logo) click on Content >> Front Page Manager
  3. Use the top row icons to perform desired actions (e.g. publish, unpublish, remove = remove from home page); you must first check the checkbox next to the article(s) prior to clicking on any of the icons/buttons
  4. You may also reorder the articles as needed, using one of the following methods:
  • use the green arrows/triangles to move each article up or down, one step at a time
  • or enter the numbers to specify the order for each article and press the disc icon in the "Order" column heading - this will save your entered order

Configure the "Home" Menu Item Parameters

There is some smart logic behind clicking the "Home" item on your main navigation/menu on your site. This logic is driven by the parameters, which you can change and here is how:

  1. Access the administrative interface (back end)
  2. On the main menu click on Menus, then select the menu list where the desired menu item resides (e.g. Main Menu)
  3. Look for the "Home" menu item click on it
  4. Once in the "Menu Item: Edit" screen, on the right-hand side click on Parameters (Basic)
  5. Enter the desired numbers in the available fields: Leading = how many articles will be displayed at the top across all content area of your home page; Intro = how many articles will display in one, two or more columns (driven by the next parameter); Columns = how many columns will the articles display in (I recommend using 1-4); Links = how many links to articles will be displayed at the bottom of your home page;
The above can be confusing so here is a little example: let's say you've got 10 articles flagged for home page (in the article you flagged the "Front Page" field as "Yes") and in the Home menu item you entered the following basic parameters: Leading = 1, Intro = 6, Columns = 3, Links = 2; here is what will be displayed on your home page: 1 article will be at the top across the entire home page content width; 6 articles will be displayed below the leading article in 3 columns and 2 rows; links to 2 more articles will be displayed at the bottom of the home page; that equals to 8 articles which means that the remaining 2 articles won't show up on the home page at all. They will still display in whichever section they belong to (e.g. if you have a section "Recipes" and category "Desserts" which one of these articles belongs to, and you have a menu item that points to the "Desserts" category, then if I click on the "Desserts" menu item, it will take me to the list of articles and this article in question will be included.
